PETG prints beautifully, but requires slightly different handling than PLA. Follow these rules to avoid common failures:

Bed Adhesion (Crucial Warning): PETG sticks too well to bare glass or smooth PEI sheets and can actually rip chunks of glass or coating off your build plate when you try to remove it. Always apply a thin layer of glue stick, painter's tape, or a dedicated release agent (like Magigoo) to act as a protective barrier.

Keep it Dry: PETG is naturally hygroscopic. If you notice excessive stringing, bubbling, or rough surface texturing, the filament has absorbed moisture. Dry the spool in a filament dryer or oven at 60°C for 4–6 hours to restore flawless print quality.

The First Layer Offset: Avoid squishing the first layer down as tightly as you would with PLA. PETG prefers to be "laid" onto the bed rather than smashed. Give the nozzle a minor Z-offset boost (+0.05mm to +0.1mm) in your slicer to keep accumulated sticky plastic from building up on the nozzle.

Question: Is PETG as strong as ABS?

Answer: Heavy stringing with PETG is almost always caused by moisture absorption or printing at a temperature that is slightly too high for your current print speed. Dry your filament first. If stringing persists, slightly increase your retraction distance or lower your hotend temperature by 5°C.

Question: Can I use this for food or liquid containers?

Answer: The raw PETG resin is generally food-safe and chemically inert. However, the FDM 3D printing process leaves microscopic layer lines that can trap bacteria, meaning the printed object itself is difficult to sanitize.
